P/M Material Grades Used-
Ridgway Powdered Metals

All MPIF (Metal Powder Industries Federation) standard and several other proprietary material grades are employed at RPM to produce your parts for their best life and functionality.

Listed below are some of the more common grades and their possible applications.

It is highly recommended that you discuss material selection with RPM’s technical people prior to specifying the grade for your application.

Description

MPIF Code

Characteristics

Iron

F-0000

Electro (soft) magnets

Iron/Carbon

F-0003; F-0008

Moderate strength and resistance to abrasion; heat-treatable.

Iron/Copper/Carbon

FC-0203; FC-0205: FC-0208; FC-0503; FC-0505; FC-0508

Good strength and wear resistance. Most P/M parts are found in this group; heat- treatable.

Iron/Nickel/Carbon

Fn-0205: FN-0208; FN-0405: FN-0408

Good impact strength. Good wear properties. Heat-treatable.

Alloy Steels

A relatively large group of alloy steels and hybrid alloy steels is available. Contact RPM’s powder metallurgists for recommendations when contemplating using materials from this group.

High strength characteristics, high density, excellent impact values, excellent wear properties. Heat-treatable.

Copper Infiltrated Steel

FX-1005; FX-1008; FX-2005; FX-2008

Good strength, improved machinability, gas tight, heat-treatable

300 Series Stainless Steels (Austenitic)

SS-303; SS-304; SS-316

Non-magnetic, high corrosion resistance.

400 Series Stainless Steels (Martensitic)

SS409; SS410

Lower corrosion resistance, heat-treatable.

400 Series Stainless Steels (Ferritic)

SS-430; SS-434

Better corrosion resistance;

Copper

C-0000

Electrical applications

Copper/Tin (Bronze)

CT-1000

Self-lubricating bearings; Non-magnetic and non-sparking; structural parts.

Copper/Zinc (Brass)

CZ-1000; CZ-2000; CZP-1000; CZP-2000

Mechanical components and hardware applications.

Copper/Nickel/Zinc (Nickel-Silver) Iron/Nickel/Carbon

CNZ-1818; CNZP-1816

Mechanical components, lustrous appearance; good machinability.

Aluminum*
*No MPIF designation at this time.

201AB; 601AB

Light weight; good strength; solution heat-treatable.
